Henry Jellett (1872–1948) was an important Irish doctor who specialized in women's health. This type of doctor is called a Gynaecologist. He was also a writer. He helped many people throughout his life, both as a doctor and during World War I.

Early Life and Education

Henry Jellett studied at Trinity College Dublin, which is a famous university in Ireland. After finishing his studies, he later became a Professor there. He taught about Midwifery, which is the care of women during pregnancy and childbirth.

Helping During World War I

During World War I, Henry Jellett played a brave role. He was the Commandant (leader) of the Munro Ambulance Corps. This group helped injured soldiers in Flanders, which is a region in Northern Belgium.

For his courage and service, he was recognized in official reports, known as being Mentioned in Despatches. He also received special awards from other countries. These included the Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Couronne de Belgique (Knight of the Order of the Crown of Belgium) and the Croix de Guerre, Française (French War Cross) with two stars. These awards showed how much his efforts were appreciated.

A Career in Medicine

After the war ended and peace returned, Henry Jellett continued his important medical work. From 1910 to 1919, he worked as a consultant at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin. This hospital is very famous for maternity care.

Later in his career, he moved to New Zealand. There, he became a consultant obstetrician for the New Zealand Department of Health. An obstetrician is a doctor who specializes in caring for pregnant women and delivering babies.

Family Life

Henry Jellett's father was also named Henry Jellett. His father was a very respected religious leader. He served as the Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin from 1889 until he passed away in 1901.
