Henry King (born January 24, 1886 – died June 29, 1982) was an American actor and film director. Many people thought he was one of the best and most successful filmmakers of his time. King was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Director. He also directed seven films that were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Biography
Before he started making movies, Henry King worked as an actor in different plays. He began taking small roles in films in 1912. From 1913 to 1925, he acted in about sixty movies.
He started directing films in 1915. He quickly became one of the most successful Hollywood directors in the 1920s and 1930s. He was nominated twice for the Best Director Oscar. In 1944, he won the first Golden Globe Award for Best Director. This was for his film The Song of Bernadette. He often worked with actors like Tyrone Power and Gregory Peck. He also worked a lot for the film studio 20th Century Fox.
Henry King was one of the 36 people who started the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This group gives out the famous Oscar awards every year. He was the last person still alive from the original founders. He directed more than 100 films during his long career.
In 1955, King received The George Eastman Award. This award honors people who have made great contributions to the art of film.
During World War II, King helped with the Civil Air Patrol. He was a captain and helped patrol the coast in Brownsville, Texas. In his later years, he was the oldest licensed private pilot in the United States. He got his pilot's license way back in 1918.
Henry King passed away from a heart attack while he was sleeping. He was 96 years old. He was buried with his second wife, Ida Davis, in Florida.
