Henry Liddell, born in 1708, became a very important person in his family at a young age. When he was just fifteen, in 1723, he inherited his family's lands and valuable coal mining businesses. This happened after his grandfather passed away. Later, in 1747, he was given the special title of the first Baron Ravensworth.

Early Life and Education

Henry Liddell was born in 1708. He grew up to take on big responsibilities. In 1725, he went to Peterhouse, Cambridge, a famous university. After his studies, in the early 1730s, he went on a "Grand Tour." This was a long trip around Europe that young, wealthy people often took to learn about art and culture.

A Career in Politics

Henry Liddell was also involved in politics. From 1734 to 1747, he served as a Member of Parliament for the area called Morpeth. A Member of Parliament is a person chosen to represent their local area in the country's government. They help make laws and decisions for everyone.

Coal Mining Business

Henry Liddell was a very successful businessman. He was one of the first members of a group called the Grand Allies. This group was formed in 1726. It was a partnership of rich landowners and coal mine owners. They worked together to make coal mining even bigger and better in Northumberland and County Durham.

Important Coal Mines

The Grand Allies invested in many coal mines early on. Some of these important mines were located in places like Gosforth, Heaton, New Benton, and Tanfield. They also invested in mines at South Causey, North Biddick, and Longbenton. These investments helped grow the coal industry.

Family and Homes

Henry Liddell had two main homes. His family's main estate was Ravensworth Castle. This large home was located in Lamesley, in what is now Tyne and Wear. From 1735, he also had a home in London. This house was at 13, St James's Square, a well-known area.

In 1735, Henry Liddell married Anne Delme. She was the daughter of Sir Peter Delme. Henry and Anne had one daughter together, named Anne. Their daughter Anne became known for writing many letters. Henry Liddell passed away on January 30, 1784. His nephew, also named Henry, took over the family's baronetcy. The title of Baron Ravensworth ended when Henry Liddell died. However, it was later brought back in 1821 for his great-nephew, Thomas.
