Playing for Clubs
Starting with Eupen
Henry Onyekuru started his football journey at the Aspire Academy in 2010. After finishing his training in 2015, he joined K.A.S. Eupen, a club connected to the academy. He played his first game for Eupen on September 5, 2015, in a match that ended in a 2–2 tie. This was in the Belgian Second Division.
Onyekuru helped his team get promoted to the top league, the Belgian First Division A, in his very first season. He made his professional debut in this higher league on July 30, 2016. He had a very successful season, becoming one of the top scorers in the league. He scored 22 goals, which caught the attention of many bigger teams in Europe.
Moving to Everton
On June 30, 2017, Onyekuru joined Everton for about £7 million. Right after joining, he was sent on loan to Anderlecht in Belgium. He was given the number nine jersey at Anderlecht for the 2017–18 season.
While playing for Anderlecht, he scored 10 goals in 28 matches. However, in December, he got a knee injury that needed surgery. This meant he would be out of action for several months. After his recovery, he returned to Anderlecht.
Loan to Galatasaray
In July 2018, Onyekuru went on loan again, this time to Galatasaray in Turkey for a whole season. Everton received about £700,000 for this loan. On May 20, 2019, Onyekuru scored a goal for Galatasaray. His goal helped them beat İstanbul Başakşehir 2–1, which secured the Süper Lig championship for Galatasaray for the second year in a row. This win also meant Galatasaray won both the league and the Turkish Cup that season.
Joining Monaco
Henry Onyekuru had trouble getting a work permit to play in the UK. So, on August 12, 2019, he made a permanent move to AS Monaco in France. He signed a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 club. The exact amount of money for the transfer was not announced, but it was thought to be between £12 million and £15 million.
Returning to Galatasaray on Loan
On January 5, 2020, Onyekuru went back to his former club, Galatasaray, on a six-month loan. This loan did not include an option for Galatasaray to buy him permanently. He played 12 games and scored one goal before his loan ended in June.
He returned to Galatasaray for another six-month loan on January 25, 2021. This time, Galatasaray had the option to buy him at the end of the loan.
Playing for Olympiacos
On August 2, 2021, Olympiacos in Greece announced that they had signed Onyekuru. He joined them on a four-year deal.
Moving to Al-Fayha
On August 11, 2023, Onyekuru joined Al-Fayha, a club in the Saudi Pro League in Saudi Arabia. He signed a two-year contract with them.
International Career
Henry Onyekuru was first called to play for the Nigerian national team, known as the Super Eagles, in May 2017. He made his first appearance for Nigeria in a friendly match against Togo on June 1, 2017, which Nigeria won 3–0.
After a strong season with Galatasaray in 2018–19, Onyekuru was chosen to be part of Nigeria's 23-man squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt. He played for 12 minutes in the tournament. This was during their semi-final match against Algeria, which Nigeria lost 1–2. Algeria went on to win the tournament.
