He went to famous schools like Eton College and Wadham College, Oxford. These schools helped him become a very educated person. Later, he joined the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1777. This group studies old things and history. In 1783, he also became a member of the Royal Society, which is a group for top scientists.
His Role in Politics
The Wyndham family had a lot of power in the city of Salisbury. Henry Wyndham became a "freeman" of the city in 1761. This meant he had special rights and could take part in local government.
He served as the Mayor of Salisbury from 1770 to 1771. The mayor is like the leader of the city. In 1772, he was the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, which is another important local role. He even led a group of cavalry (soldiers on horseback) in Salisbury in 1794.
In 1795, Henry Wyndham was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Wiltshire. He was part of the Whig political party. He stayed an MP until 1812, but he didn't go to Parliament very often.
Friendship with a Famous Painter
Henry Wyndham was a big fan of the famous painter J. M. W. Turner. Turner was known for his beautiful landscape paintings. Turner even stayed with Henry Wyndham at his home in Salisbury several times.
During his visits, Turner painted two pictures of the landscape around Wyndham's home. These paintings were made around 1798 and 1800. Today, you can find these artworks in the British Museum.
Family Life
Henry Wyndham married Caroline Hearst on October 18, 1768. They had five sons and two daughters together.
He passed away on May 3, 1819. He was buried in his family's special burial place at St Edmund's Church, Salisbury. His oldest son, Wadham Wyndham, followed in his footsteps and also became an MP for Salisbury.
