Sir Henry Percy Gordon, 2nd Baronet (born October 21, 1806 – died July 29, 1876) was a talented man who worked as a lawyer and an artist. He was also a member of a famous science group, known as the FRS.

His Early Life and Education

Henry Percy Gordon was the only son of Sir James Willoughby Gordon, 1st Baronet. His mother was Isabella Julia Levina Bennet.

Studying at Cambridge

In 1823, Henry went to Peterhouse, Cambridge, a famous university. He was very good at math! In 1827, he became the "senior wrangler," which means he was the top math student in his year. He was even better than some very famous mathematicians like Augustus De Morgan.

He also won the "Smith's Prize" for his excellent work in math and physics. After finishing his studies, he became a Fellow of his college. This meant he was a special member of the university. He earned his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in 1830.

Becoming a Lawyer

After university, Henry decided to become a lawyer. He joined Lincoln's Inn in 1828, which is one of the places where lawyers in England are trained. By 1831, he was "called to the bar," meaning he was officially allowed to work as a lawyer.

Joining the Royal Society

In 1830, Henry Percy Gordon became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for important scientists. Being a Fellow means you are recognized for your contributions to science.

Public Service

Henry also helped his local community. He was a Justice of the Peace and a deputy lieutenant for the Isle of Wight. These roles meant he helped keep law and order and supported the local government.

Becoming a Baronet and Laird

In 1851, Henry's father passed away. Henry then became the 2nd Baronet. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

He also became the 13th "laird" of Knockespock in 1854. A laird is a Scottish word for a landowner or lord of an estate.

His Passing

Sir Henry Percy Gordon died suddenly in 1876. When he passed away, his baronetcy (the title) ended because he did not have a son to inherit it.

His Family and Art

In 1839, Henry Percy Gordon married Lady Mary Agnes Blanche Ashburnham. She was the daughter of George Ashburnham, 3rd Earl of Ashburnham.

Their Daughter

Henry and Mary had one daughter, Mary Charlotte Julia Gordon (who lived until 1926). She grew up to be a talented writer and translator. She published her works under the name Mrs. Disney Leith. She married General Robert William Disney Leith.

Henry as an Artist

Besides being a lawyer and a scholar, Henry Percy Gordon was also an artist. He was an engraver, which means he made pictures by carving designs into metal plates. He even worked on some art projects with his sister, Julia Emily Gordon.
