Henry Robert Richmond (born June 1829 – died 7 December 1890) was an important person in New Zealand's history. He was a politician and farmer in the 1800s. From 1865 to 1869, he served as the Superintendent of Taranaki Province. Think of a Superintendent like a governor or a main leader for a region back then.

Henry Richmond's Early Life

Henry Richmond was born in June 1829 in London, England. He came from a well-known family. His brothers and sisters included James Crowe Richmond, Jane Maria Atkinson, and William Richmond. This family, called the Richmond-Atkinson family, was very connected in the Taranaki region of New Zealand.

Henry went to school at University College School. Later, he studied at University College London. There, he focused on subjects like mathematics and chemistry. In 1851, Henry moved to New Zealand with his brother, James.

Family Life

Henry Richmond got married twice. His first wife was Mary Blanche Hursthouse. They married in 1858. Sadly, Mary passed away in 1864. They had four children together.

Later, in 1868, Henry married Emma Jane Parris. Henry and Emma had three children.

A Leader in Taranaki

Henry Richmond became a key leader in the Taranaki region. He was elected as the Superintendent of Taranaki Province. He held this important role from 1865 until 1869. As Superintendent, he helped manage the province's affairs.

Later Life and Career

After his time as Superintendent, Henry Richmond moved to Nelson. He decided to study law there. He worked in a law office to learn about legal matters.

Once he finished his studies, he became a barrister and solicitor. This means he was qualified to represent people in court and give legal advice. In 1875, he returned to New Plymouth. He worked as a lawyer there for many years.

In late 1890, Henry Richmond went to Christchurch for medical help. He passed away there on 7 December 1890, at the age of 61. He was buried in the Addington Cemetery.
