Henry Winterfeld (born April 9, 1901, in Hamburg, Germany; died January 27, 1990, in Machias, Maine) was a German writer and artist. He was very well-known for his exciting books for children and young adults. He often used the pen name Manfred Michael for his stories. In 1940, he moved to the United States and lived there for the rest of his life.
Who Was Henry Winterfeld?
Henry Winterfeld was a talented writer and artist. He was married to Elsie Winterfeld, who designed toys. She even created a special doll with three heads!
How His Writing Started
Henry Winterfeld began writing in 1933. He wanted to cheer up his young son, Thomas Henry Winterfeld, who was sick. This led to his first book, Trouble at Timpetill, which came out in 1937. He published it under his pen name, Manfred Michael.
Moving to a New Home
Because of the difficult political situation in Germany at the time, Henry Winterfeld, who was Jewish, had to leave his home country. He moved to Austria in 1933 and then to France in 1938.
In October 1939, he was held in a camp in Nevers, France. Luckily, he was able to move to the United States before Germany invaded France in May 1940. In 1946, he became an American citizen.
