Herbert Abingdon Draper Compton (born in 1770 – died on January 14, 1846) was an important British lawyer and judge. He held top legal positions in British India, serving as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Bombay. This means he was the main judge in Bombay. He also worked as the Advocate-General of Madras and Calcutta, which meant he was the chief legal advisor for the government in those areas.

Early Life and Education

Herbert Compton was the only son of Walter Abingdon Compton, who lived in Gloucestershire, England. When he was young, he joined the British Royal Army and traveled with his army group to British India.

After his time in the army, he went back to England. There, he spent some time writing for newspapers, especially one called the Pilot. He also began to study law very seriously. On November 22, 1808, he completed his law studies and became a lawyer at Lincoln's Inn, a famous place for training lawyers in London.

Career in India

Herbert Compton returned to India in 1819. He started working as a lawyer at Fort St. George, a British settlement. His career quickly advanced.

In 1822, he was given important jobs as the Advocate-General in both Madras and at the Calcutta High Court. This meant he was the main lawyer representing the government in these major cities. Later, in 1831, he became the Chief Justice of Bombay. This was a very high position, making him the top judge in the region. Because of his important work, he was also made a knight, which is a special honor given by the King or Queen.

After many years of service, Herbert Compton retired from his work in India. He went back to England and passed away at his home in Hyde Park Gardens in 1846.
