After finishing law school, Hutton began his legal career. From 1962 to 1964, he worked as an attorney. He helped the Pennsylvania Housing and Home Finance Agency.

Then, he worked as a private lawyer in Philadelphia. This means he had his own law practice. He did this from 1964 until 1988. During some of these years, he also worked for the Board of Revision of Taxes in Philadelphia. He was a hearing officer there from 1982 to 1988.

Becoming a Federal Judge

In 1988, President Ronald Reagan chose Herbert Hutton to be a federal judge. He was nominated for a position on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. This court handles important legal cases in eastern Pennsylvania.

The United States Senate had to approve his nomination. They confirmed him on August 11, 1988. He officially became a judge the next day, on August 12, 1988.

Later Years and Legacy

Judge Hutton served as a federal judge for many years. On September 6, 2003, he took on a new role. He became a Senior Judge. This means he still worked for the court but with a reduced workload.

He continued to serve as a Senior Judge until he passed away. Herbert J. Hutton died on April 8, 2007. He passed away in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, after being sick for some time.
