Herbert Müller Rebmann (born May 11, 1940 – died May 24, 1981) was a famous racing driver from Switzerland. He was born in Reinach and was often called Stumpen-Herbie. He was known for his amazing driving skills and his love for speed.

Herbert Müller achieved many great things in his racing career. He won the famous Targa Florio race twice, once in 1966 and again in 1973. Both of these victories were achieved while driving a Porsche car. The Targa Florio was a very challenging road race held in Sicily, Italy.

He once had a very scary moment during an Interserie race at the Nürburgring track. He was driving a Ferrari 512 when he was involved in a fiery crash near the pit lane. Luckily, Herbert was able to get out of the car safely. A firefighter quickly helped put out the flames on his racing suit. This showed how brave and quick-thinking he was.

Sadly, Herbert Müller passed away during the 1981 1000 km Nürburgring race. He was driving his Porsche 908 Turbo with his good friend Siegfried Brunn. Before this race, Herbert had mentioned that he planned to retire from motorsports afterward. During the race, he was involved in a serious accident and passed away. The race was stopped after this sad event.

Herbert Müller's Racing Career Highlights

Formula One Racing Experience

Herbert Müller had a brief experience in Formula One, which is the highest class of international racing. He was listed to race in the 1971 Italian Grand Prix with a non-works Lotus car, but he did not start the race.

He also competed in some non-championship Formula One races. These races were not part of the official world championship but were still important events. For example, he finished 5th in the 1963 Pau Grand Prix while driving a Lotus 21 for Scuderia Filipinetti.

Le Mans 24 Hours Races

Herbert Müller was a regular competitor in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the world's most famous endurance races. This race tests both the drivers and their cars over a full day and night.

  • 1964: He finished 11th overall and 4th in his class with a Porsche 904/4 GTS.
  • 1971: He achieved an impressive 2nd place overall and 2nd in his class with a Porsche 917K. This was a fantastic result in such a tough race.
  • 1974: He again finished 2nd overall and 2nd in his class, this time with a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR Turbo.
  • 1979: He finished 4th overall but won his class (Gr. 4 GT) with a Porsche 934. This was a great victory for his team.

Over the years, he drove many different cars at Le Mans, including Ford GT40s, various Ferrari models, and Matra-Simca MS630s. While he had some retirements, his podium finishes show his skill and determination as an endurance racer.
