About the Herbst Theatre Building
Design and Art Inside
The Herbst Theatre was first called the Veterans Auditorium. It was updated and renamed in 1977. This was done to honor brothers Herman and Maurice Herbst. Their foundation helped pay for the updates.
You enter the theatre through a foyer. This foyer is off the main lobby of the building. Eight large, beautiful murals decorate the walls. These murals were created by Frank Brangwyn. He made them for the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition. Above, five fancy chandeliers hang from the ceiling. The ceiling is decorated with blue and gold leaf.
A Historic Signing Place
On June 26, 1945, a very important event happened here. The United Nations Charter was signed on the stage of the Herbst Theatre. This document was signed by 50 countries. It happened after a two-month meeting. That meeting took place at the War Memorial Opera House. The United Nations Charter is like a rulebook for how countries should work together. It aims to keep peace around the world.
