Herdsman is a suburb in Perth, Western Australia. It's famous for Herdsman Lake and the beautiful Herdsman Lake Regional Park. This area is looked after by the City of Stirling, which is its local government.
Herdsman: A Look at Its Past
Long ago, when people first settled here, they used to raise cattle near Herdsman Lake. It was a good spot for animals.
In 1928, a special area called the Herdsman Lake Suburban Area was officially created. This area was next to the lake. It included parts of what we now know as Churchlands and Woodlands, as well as the modern suburb of Herdsman.
Modern Herdsman: From Swamp to Suburb
The 1980s brought big changes to Herdsman. A swampy area north of the lake was transformed. Workers used a process called dredging to remove mud and water. This made the land solid enough for building.
This new land was used to create Jon Sanders Drive. It also became a light industrial park around Walters Drive. An industrial park is an area with many businesses and factories. Before this, some companies along Scarborough Beach Road had the swamp right behind them.
Today, this transformed area is part of Osborne Park. However, some people still call the parts closest to Herdsman Lake Regional Park "Herdsman."
