Woodlands is a friendly suburb located in Perth, Western Australia. It's part of the City of Stirling local government area. Many of the streets here are named after different kinds of trees, like oak, elm, birch, sandalwood, and willow.

The Story of Woodlands: How It Began

Woodlands has a cool history that goes back a long time! The land was once part of a big area called the Woodlands Estate.

What's in a Name? Jackadup to Jackadder Lake

Back in 1842, the area was known by its Aboriginal name, "Jackadup." This name later changed to "Jackadder Lake," which is what the lake in Woodlands is still called today.

Building Our Community: Homes and Shops

Homes started to be built in Woodlands in the 1960s. One of the first streets to get houses was Lake View Road, which is now called Huntriss Road. A builder named Jim Graham built many of the first homes in the 1960s. These homes were often on large blocks of land.

In the past, Woodlands was surrounded by lots of bushland. The closest developed suburb was Floreat, where people would go shopping. Churchlands was mostly empty except for the high school. Herdsman Lake also had no houses around it until the 1980s.

Woodlands Village was a handy place for locals to get what they needed. It had a butcher, a school uniform shop, and even a petrol station for a while.

Woodlands Primary School: A Busy Place

In the 1970s, Woodlands Primary School was very busy! It had over 700 students. There were about three classes for each grade, and each class had around 30 to 36 students. Kids used to walk to school, and there weren't many cars around back then.

Jackadder Lake: A Home for Wildlife

Around 1980, a man made island was built in Jackadder Lake. This island was created to give birds and other wildlife a safe place to build their nests. Many of the trees around the lake were planted by students from Woodlands Primary School, who were like special "tree wardens."

Learning in Woodlands: Our Schools

Woodlands is home to two primary schools, helping kids in the area learn and grow:

  • Woodlands Primary School, which opened in 1964. You can find it at 7 Bentwood Avenue.
  • Holy Rosary Catholic Primary School, which started in 1959. It's located at 35 Williamstown Road.

Fun and Shopping in Woodlands

Woodlands has great places for fun and getting your shopping done!

Parks and Green Spaces

One of the best places to hang out is around Jackadder Lake. It was first called "Mews Lake" way back in 1831. Today, it's a popular spot for people to relax and enjoy the outdoors. There are also other smaller parks, like Sweeting Reserve and Woodlands Reserve, where you can play and explore.

Shopping and Entertainment

The main shopping area for the neighborhood is called "Woodlands Village." It's right in the middle of the suburb. You can also find more shops along Scarborough Beach Road in the northern part of Woodlands. For entertainment, there's Event Cinemas on Liege Street, where you can catch the latest movies!
