Hermagor-Pressegger See (Slovene: Šmohor-Preseško jezero) is a town in the Austrian state of Carinthia. It is the main administrative center of the Hermagor District. The town gets its name from Saint Hermagoras of Aquileia. He was an early Christian bishop.

Where is Hermagor-Pressegger See?

Hermagor is located in the lower Gail valley. It sits at the northern base of the Carnic Alps. The town is very close to the border with Italy. To the south, the Naßfeld Pass connects it to the Italian town of Pontebba.

To the north, a road goes through Gitschtal into the Gailtal Alps. It crosses the Kreuzberg Saddle to reach Weissensee lake. From there, it continues to Greifenburg in the Drava valley. Hermagor also has a train station. It is on the Gailtal Railway line, which runs from Arnoldstein to Kötschach-Mauthen.

Lake Pressegg

The area around Hermagor includes the shallow Pressegger See. This is one of the warmest lakes in Austria. It has many reed banks along its shores.

Early Settlements

People have lived in the Hermagor area for a very long time. Old discoveries show that people were here around 1800-1200 BC. This was a place where iron ore was mined. Later, it became part of the Celtic kingdom called Noricum. This kingdom joined the Roman Empire in 15 BC.

Growth of the Town

The church parish of Saint Hermagoras was first mentioned in a document from 1169. It was likely started by the Patriarchs of Aquileia. Because of its important location, Hermagor grew quickly. It gained the right to hold a market in 1288. This made it the main settlement in the Gail valley.

Later Developments

In 1779, a botanist named Franz Xaver von Wulfen found a special flower. He discovered the Wulfenia carinthiaca on the slopes of the Gartnerkofel mountain. Hermagor became the capital of its own district in 1868. It also had a military base. The Gailtal Railway line was built starting in 1894. It was extended in 1915 for military use during World War I.

Hermagor officially became a town on October 10, 1930. This was to celebrate ten years since the Carinthian plebiscite. The current municipality of Hermagor-Pressegger See was formed in 1973. This happened when several smaller towns joined together.
