Club Career
Hermann Nuber joined Kickers Offenbach as a young player in 1946. He was only 17 years old when he played his first senior game in 1953. This match was part of the DFB-Pokal, which is a big German football cup competition.
From 1955, Nuber became a regular starter for Kickers Offenbach. He helped his team reach the final of the 1959 German football championship. They played against Eintracht Frankfurt in that important game.
When the Bundesliga was created in 1963, it became Germany's top football league. Kickers Offenbach, with Nuber, started in the Regionalliga. This was the second-highest league at that time.
In 1968, Kickers Offenbach earned promotion to the Bundesliga. This meant they moved up to the top league. In the same year, Nuber was voted as the second-best player in Germany. He was just behind the legendary player Franz Beckenbauer in the Germany's footballer of the year awards.
Nuber stopped playing professionally in 1969. This was after Kickers Offenbach was relegated from the Bundesliga. He missed the club's big win of the 1970–71 DFB-Pokal the next season. However, he briefly returned to play in the Bundesliga in 1971 for coach Rudi Gutendorf. Overall, he played in 408 league games and scored 164 goals between 1953 and 1971.
International Career
Hermann Nuber also played football for Germany at the youth level. He was chosen as one of 22 players for the West Germany national team squad. This was for the 1958 FIFA World Cup. He was one of four players who stayed in Germany, ready to be called up if needed during the tournament.
Style of Play
Nuber started his career playing as an "inside forward." This is an attacking position, similar to a striker. Later in his career, he played as a "libero." This is a defensive role, where the player often sweeps up behind the main defenders.
He was known for being able to use both feet well. This made him a special free-kick taker. Nuber was also very good with the ball and had a strong, competitive spirit on the field.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Nuber became a coach. He was the temporary coach for Kickers Offenbach two times. One of these times was during the 1983–84 Bundesliga season. This was the club's last season in the Bundesliga for a while.
He also spent 15 years coaching amateur and youth teams. During this time, he helped discover and develop many footballers who later became well-known.
Legacy
Hermann Nuber is highly respected by Kickers Offenbach fans. A bronze statue of him was placed at Bieberer Berg Stadion. This is Kickers Offenbach's home stadium. The statue was put there on his 60th birthday in 1995.
In the summer of 2022, the stadium's main stand was named "Hermann-Nuber-Tribüne" in his honor. When he passed away, the local newspaper Offenbach-Post called him the club's "most popular" player.
Death
Hermann Nuber died on December 12, 2022. He passed away in his hometown of Offenbach at the age of 87.
