Hermenegildo Alóitez (born around 898 – died before December 10, 966) was a very important and powerful noble in Galicia during the 900s. His parents were Count Aloito Gutiérrez and Argilo Alóitez. His mother's parents, Alóito and Paterna, started the monastery of San Nicolao de Cis [gl].

His Life Story

Hermenegildo came from a very important family. They had strong connections to the royal family and the church. For example, his uncle, Count Hermenegildo Gutiérrez, was a hero who defeated Muslim armies and took over cities like Oporto and Coimbra. This uncle was also the father of Queen Elvira Menéndez, who married King Ordoño II. Another important relative was Saint Rudesind.

Hermenegildo had three brothers: Gundesindo Alóitez, who became a Bishop, Arias, and Count Gutierre Alóitez.

In 920, King Ramiro II made Hermenegildo the Count of Présaras. He also served as the king's chief advisor, called a mayordomo mayor, from 937 to 949.

In 952, Hermenegildo and his wife Paterna founded the Monastery of Sobrado dos Monges. This monastery became very important to their family. Later, in 1142, two of their descendants, the brothers Fernando and Bermudo Pérez de Traba, gave the monastery to the Cistercian monks.

In 958, Hermenegildo and Paterna gave the county of Présaras to the monastery they had founded. In the same year, Hermenegildo decided to live as a monk at the monastery for the rest of his life. He passed away before December 10, 966, and was buried there.

Family

Hermenegildo married Paterna Gundesíndiz. She died before December 955. They had three children:

  • Sisnando Menéndez (died 968): He became a Bishop. He had some disagreements with King Sancho I of León. He died in 968 while fighting against Viking invaders.
  • Rodrigo Menéndez: He was a powerful lord and owned a castle. He married Elvira Alóitez. Their grandson, Gutierre Rodríguez, had a daughter named Ilduara Gutiérrez. She was the mother of Elvira de Faro, who married Count Froila Vermúdez. Through this marriage, the Monastery of Sobrado was passed down to the Traba brothers, Fernando and Bermudo.
  • An unnamed daughter: She married García Íñiguez. In 984, their daughter, Jimena Garcés, gave a gift to the Sobrado Monastery. She mentioned her parents and her uncles Sisnando and Rodrigo in the gift document.
