Railroad History

Long ago, in the early 1900s, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (CRI&PR) was built near Hermitage. This railroad was very important for moving timber and lumber. It helped connect large sawmills in Crossett and Fordyce, allowing wood products to be transported easily. These sawmills were owned by important business people like Charles Warner Gates, John Wenzel Watzek, and Edward Savage Crossett. The railroad helped these companies grow and move their products across the region.
