Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly facts for kids
Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly is a big factory in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. It belongs to the Ford Motor Company. This factory builds cars like the Ford Bronco Sport and the Ford Maverick (2022). These cars are made for people in North America.
The factory started making cars in 1986. About 1,500 people work there. The building is very large, covering about 150,000 square meters (which is like 1.6 million square feet).
When the factory first opened, Ford owned it with another car company called Mazda. They shared ideas on how to build cars. At first, many parts came from Japan. Then, the cars were put together in Hermosillo. Over time, more and more parts were made closer to the factory.
The factory is in the Sonoran Desert, where water can be scarce. Because of this, the factory has worked hard to use 40% less water than before. It even has its own wells that can supply water to the city if there's an emergency.
In 2019, Ford had plans to build a different type of van, the Ford Transit Connect, at this factory. But these plans changed, and that van is no longer made for North America.

How Cars Are Made: Flexible Manufacturing
Around 2003, Ford decided to make the Hermosillo factory even better. They wanted it to be more efficient and able to switch between making different car models quickly. Ford spent a lot of money, about US$1 billion, to update the plant. They also built a large area nearby for other companies that supply car parts. This area was about 162,000 square meters (1.75 million square feet).
These improvements helped the factory change what it was building very fast. The factory could then make up to 300,000 cars each year. In 2007, the Hermosillo plant was known for being very productive. It took only about 20.78 hours to build one car.
