Hernando de Lerma

Hernando de Lerma Polanco was an important Spanish leader who founded the city of Salta, Argentina. He was born on November 1, 1541. He played a big role in the early history of what is now Argentina.

Becoming Governor

On November 13, 1577, King Philip II of Spain chose Hernando de Lerma to be the Governor of Tucumán. This area is now part of Argentina.

As governor, de Lerma faced many challenges. He had disagreements with several people, including other Spanish leaders and even a spokesman for a Catholic bishop. He also had problems with Francisco Salcedo, another Catholic man who had built a church.

People who disagreed with de Lerma sometimes faced difficulties. For example, Salcedo left the area. But de Lerma's men brought him back to Tucumán, where he was put in jail.

Founding Salta

In April 1582, Hernando de Lerma founded a new city. He named it "Lerma City on Salta Valley." Today, we know it as Salta. He built it next to the Arenales River.

De Lerma believed Salta would become a very important place for trade. Spain had opened seaports in Santiago de Chile, Callao, and Buenos Aires. Salta was located between the Viceroyalty of Peru and the port at the Río de la Plata river. De Lerma thought this location would be perfect for connecting these places. He hoped that goods shipped from Madrid would pass through Salta.

He also made friends with the local Native Americans. He believed they could help him build and grow the new city. Many other Spanish people also came to settle in the area.

Challenges in the New City

After founding Salta, de Lerma faced new problems. More Spanish explorers arrived and tried to take control of the city. This led to many arguments and conflicts.

The city also went through tough times because of diseases. Plus, the area where Salta was built often had earthquakes.

Later Life and Death

In 1584, Hernando de Lerma was arrested and put in jail in Salta. He did not agree with this decision. So, he traveled back to Spain to ask the highest court to review his case.

However, his appeal was not successful. He was sent to a Spanish jail. We know that Hernando de Lerma died in jail, but the exact year of his death is not known.

Historians have different views on Hernando de Lerma. Historian Paul Goussac described his time as governor as very difficult. Another historian from Salta, Armando Bazan, wrote that de Lerma was a challenging leader.
