Starting His Political Journey
Hervé de Charette first became a member of the Union for French Democracy (UDF) party. In 1986, he was elected as a "deputy" for the first time. A deputy is like a representative in the French parliament, similar to a member of Congress in some other countries. He represented the Maine-et-Loire area.
Important Government Roles
From 1986 to 1988, during a time called "cohabitation," he served as the Minister of Civil Service. Cohabitation happens in France when the President and the Prime Minister are from different political parties. Later, from 1993 to 1995, he was the Minister of Housing.
Hervé de Charette was very loyal to the UDF leader, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. Unlike many other UDF politicians, he supported Jacques Chirac in the 1995 French presidential election. Jacques Chirac won that election.
After the election, Hervé de Charette helped create and lead a part of the UDF called the Popular Party for French Democracy (PPDF). He then became the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He held this important job until 1997, when his political group lost the election.
Changing Political Parties
In 2002, he joined a new party called the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP). Later, in December 2009, he left the UMP to join another party called the Nouveau Centre.
