Hess, Oklahoma facts for kids
Hess is a small place in the southeastern part of Jackson County, which is in the state of Oklahoma. It's not a big city with its own government, but more like a small neighborhood. You can find Hess about 4.5 miles southeast of Elmer. It's also about 14 miles northwest of Frederick, which is in a nearby county called Tillman County. The famous Red River and the border with Texas are just four miles to the south.

Early Days of Hess
Hess got its start a long time ago. In 1889, a post office opened there. This post office helped people send and receive letters and packages. It stayed open for many years, until 1920. The community was named after Elvira P. Hess. She was one of the first people to work as a postmaster there.

Even though Hess is a small place, some interesting people were born there!
- Earlene Risinger: Earlene was born in Hess in 1927. She became a talented pitcher in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. This was a special baseball league for women.
- Hobart Brown: Hobart was born in Hess in 1934. He grew up to be an American sculptor. He is famous for starting something called Kinetic Sculpture Racing. These are races where people build amazing, moving sculptures that they can ride!
