Hester Stanhope, Viscountess Mahon (born October 19, 1755 – died July 20, 1780), was also known as Lady Hester Pitt. She was the wife of Charles Stanhope, Viscount Mahon. He later became the 3rd Earl Stanhope.

Hester was a noblewoman from a very important family in British history. She was known for her family connections and her short life.

Early Life and Family Connections

Hester Stanhope was born on October 19, 1755. Her parents were William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham and Hester Grenville. Her father, William Pitt, was a very famous politician. He served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. This is the leader of the British government.

Hester was the oldest daughter in her family. She had a younger brother who also became very famous. This was William Pitt the Younger. Just like their father, he also became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. It was quite rare for two people from the same family to hold such a high position!

Marriage and Children

Hester married Viscount Mahon on December 19, 1774. A Viscount is a title of nobility, ranking below an Earl. Together, they had three daughters:

  • Lady Hester Stanhope (1776–1839); She grew up to be an adventurous traveler. She explored many places, including parts of the Middle East. She never married and lived to be 63 years old.
  • Lady Griselda Stanhope (1778–1851); She later married a man named John Tekell.
  • Lady Lucy Rachel Stanhope (1780–1814); She married Thomas Taylor. He was a local chemist or pharmacist in their town. They had children together.

The family lived in a house in Harley Street in London.

Later Life and Passing

After her third daughter, Lucy, was born, Lady Hester became very ill. She was taken to Chevening, a place in Kent, to try and get better. Sadly, she passed away there on July 20, 1780. She was only 24 years old. Hester was buried at St Botolph's Church in Chevening.

A year after Hester's death, her husband, Charles Stanhope, married again. His second wife was Louisa Grenville. She was Hester's first cousin. Charles later inherited his father's title and became the 3rd Earl Stanhope in 1786.
