Hext is a small, unincorporated community in Menard County, Texas, United States. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city. In the year 2000, about 73 people lived there.

Where is Hext?

Hext is located in eastern Menard County, Texas. You can find it where Texas State Highway 29 and Ranch to Market Road 1221 meet. It's about 16 miles east of the town of Menard. Hext is also about 131 miles northwest of Austin, the capital city of Texas.

A Look at Hext's History

The community of Hext was first settled in the 1870s. Back then, it was known by a different name: Maringo (or Marengo).

How Hext Got Its Name

In 1895, the people living in Maringo wanted to open a post office. They found out that the name "Maringo" was already being used by another place. So, they decided to choose a new name. They picked "Hext" to honor Joseph Robert "Bob" Hext. He was one of the first people to settle in that area. The post office officially opened in 1897, making the name Hext permanent.

Growth and Decline of Hext

Hext was at its busiest around 1914. At that time, about 125 people lived there. The community had two general stores where people could buy things. There was also a hotel and a cotton gin, which was a machine used to separate cotton fibers. A Church of Christ had been started in 1904, and a Baptist church opened in 1916.

After this busy period, the number of people in Hext started to go down. By the mid-1920s, only about 40 people lived there. However, the population grew again to around 60 people in the late 1940s. By 1988, Hext had 64 residents. This number increased slightly to 73 people by the year 2000.

Hext Today

Even though Hext is not a city, it still has a working post office. Its ZIP code is 76848. You can also see some old, empty buildings in Hext, like an old schoolhouse and a church. These buildings are reminders of the community's past.
