Heylor is a small community located in Northmavine, Shetland, Scotland. It sits on the southern side of a sea inlet called Ronas Voe. Right across from Heylor is Ronas Hill, which is the tallest mountain in Shetland.

What's in a Name? The Meaning of Heylor

The name Heylor comes from an old language called Old Norse. The word it comes from is hellir, which means "cave" or "cavern". This makes sense because there are several caves in the area. Most of these caves can only be reached by boat from the sea.

Heylor Through Time: A Look at Its History

Heylor has been mentioned in old documents for a very long time. One of the first times it might have been written down was in 1490. This document talked about dividing property and called the place Heleland.

Heylor also shows up in a document from 1545. This paper confirmed an agreement from an even older document, from 1516. The 1516 agreement was about transferring land between landowners who followed something called Udal law. This was an old system of land ownership, common in Shetland, where land was passed down through families without needing formal deeds like today. The name Heelle in these old papers is believed to refer to Heylor.

There used to be a post office in Heylor. Because of this, many homes several miles away still use "Heylor" in their postal addresses. This shows how important the post office was to the wider area.
