Hezekiah Butterworth (born December 22, 1839 – died September 5, 1905) was an American writer and poet. He was especially known for his exciting adventure books for young readers.

Hezekiah Butterworth was born in Warren, Rhode Island. He loved to travel and share his adventures. He gave talks about education, music, and his trips. He visited places like Europe, South America, Cuba, and Canada.

Most of Butterworth's books were written for young people, just like you! Some of his popular books include the Zig-Zag Journeys series. He also wrote The Knight of Liberty and In the Boyhood of Lincoln. Another interesting book was The Wampum Belt, which told the story of William Penn and his peace treaty with the Lenape people. He even wrote musical stories called cantatas.

His Writing Career

Butterworth started writing for important newspapers when he was young. One of these was the New York Independent. In 1870, he began working with The Youth's Companion. This was a very popular magazine for young people.

He wrote 17 books in his Zig-Zag Journeys series. These books were very popular, selling 250,000 copies! He also wrote Story of the Hymns in 1875. This book won him the George Wood Gold Medal. Later, he wrote a follow-up book called The Story of the Tunes.

Butterworth also wrote for other famous magazines. These included Atlantic Monthly and Harper's. He was also one of the editors for The Youth's Companion. Some of his published poems are in books like Poems for Christmas, Easter and New Year's and Songs of History.

Where He Lived

Hezekiah Butterworth owned a farm in Bristol, Rhode Island. He also had a small house in Belleview, Florida.
