Hibera facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hibera was an ancient city that played a very important role in the start of the Second Punic War. This big war was fought between the Carthaginians and the Romans.

Ancient writings, especially from a historian named Titus Livius in his book History of Rome, tell us where Hibera was located. It was in the northeast part of the Iberian Peninsula, close to where the Ebro river meets the sea. After the Romans and Carthaginians ruled the city, it later became known as Dertosa.

Finding the Lost City of Hibera

For a long time, no one could find any proof that Hibera ever existed. Its old buildings were hidden deep underground. This made some people wonder if the city was just a legend.

Uncovering Ancient Walls

In August 2007, something exciting happened! Archaeologists, who are like history detectives, found parts of the city's walls. These walls were very old, dating back to about 700 BC. They were found near the modern city of Tortosa.

What the Walls Showed

Finding these walls was a huge discovery. It proved that Hibera was real and was exactly where the ancient texts said it was. These strong walls also showed how the city protected itself from attacks long ago.
