What Makes Higganum Landing Special?
Higganum Landing is now a quiet neighborhood where people live. But long ago, it was a very busy and important place! From about 1760 to 1870, it was a successful trading port. It was also a major center for building ships.
A Busy Port and Shipyard
The Connecticut River has a gentle curve here. This bend created a natural, safe harbor for boats. Because of this great location, more than 150 ships were built right here! Imagine all the activity and noise from building those big vessels. Ships would come and go, bringing goods to trade.
Old Houses with Cool Styles
The district is also important because of its old houses. There are nine historic homes in the area. These houses were built between the late 1700s and the mid-1800s. They show off different styles of architecture from that time.

You can see houses built in the Cape Cod style. These are often smaller, cozy homes. There are also homes in the Georgian style. These are usually bigger and more formal. Finally, you'll find houses built in the Federal style. This style often has elegant details and balanced designs.
