Highway City is a small place in Fresno County, California. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

Highway City is located about 2.5 miles (4 km) southeast of a place called Herndon. It sits at an elevation of 299 feet (91 meters) above sea level.

What is Highway City?

Highway City is a community that has grown over time. Some parts of it have even become part of the nearby city of Fresno. It's a place where people live and work, even though it doesn't have its own city hall or mayor.

Location and Roads

This community is important because of where it is. It's found near where two major roads meet: California State Route 99 and Shaw Avenue. State Route 99 is a big highway that runs through California. Shaw Avenue is one of the main streets in Fresno. This makes Highway City easy to get to and from.

A Look Back in Time

Highway City has an interesting past.

  • Original Name: It was once known as Biola Junction.
  • Early Population: In 1950, a count of people called the 1950 U.S. Census showed that about 1,002 people lived there.
  • Post Office: A post office, where people send and receive mail, opened in Highway City in 1951.
  • Highway Changes: In 1960, the main highway, US Route 99, was changed. This change, called a realignment, split Highway City into two parts.

How Highway City Got Its Name

The name "Highway City" was first used by a fig farmer named J. C. Forkner. He grew figs and had a business called "Golden State Highway Fig Gardens." He used this area as a shipping center to send his figs by railroad. Because it was so close to the main highway and used for shipping, the name "Highway City" stuck.

Community Life

Today, Highway City has a place for people to gather. The Highway City Community Center is located in a small public park. You can find it just north of Shaw Avenue. It's a spot where local residents can meet and enjoy the outdoors.
