Henrique Hilário Meireles Alves Sampaio (born 21 October 1975), known as Hilário, is a football coach and former player from Portugal. He played as a goalkeeper. Hilário is currently the goalkeeping coach for the England national team.

He spent most of his career playing for two big clubs: Porto in Portugal and Chelsea in England. He was often a backup goalkeeper for these teams. He played in 160 top-league matches in Portugal over nine seasons.

Hilário's Football Journey

Early Career in Portugal

Hilário was born in São Pedro da Cova, a town in Portugal. He started playing football in the youth system of Porto, a famous Portuguese club. After leaving Porto's youth team, he began his professional career. He played for smaller clubs like Naval and Académica de Coimbra.

Hilário returned to Porto for the 1996–97 season. He played 18 matches and helped his team win the Portuguese league championship. However, he later became a backup player. He was often sent to other teams on a loan to gain more experience. He also played for Porto's reserve team, Porto B.

Playing for Nacional

In 2004, Hilário left Porto and joined Nacional permanently. He played 29 matches in his first year with Nacional. Later, he lost his starting spot when another goalkeeper, Diego Benaglio, joined the team.

Hilário joined Chelsea in England on June 1, 2006. He reunited with his former coach from Porto, José Mourinho. He was initially the third-choice goalkeeper for Chelsea. However, he got a chance to play when the main goalkeepers, Petr Čech and Carlo Cudicini, both got injured in October 2006.

Hilário made his first appearance for Chelsea on October 18 against Barcelona. He helped his team win 1–0 without letting in any goals. Three days later, he played his first Premier League match against Portsmouth, which Chelsea won 2–1.

During the 2006–07 season, Hilário played in 18 matches. He kept a clean sheet (meaning he didn't let in any goals) in eight of those games. He even saved a penalty against Sheffield United. When Petr Čech recovered from his injury, Hilário returned to being a backup.

In the following seasons, Hilário continued to be a reliable backup. He stepped in when Čech or Cudicini were injured. For example, in 2008, he played in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match against Fenerbahce. When Cudicini left Chelsea in 2009, Hilário became the second-choice goalkeeper.

He played important matches when Čech was unavailable. In September 2009, he came on after Čech received a red card. He also started against Liverpool and kept a clean sheet. In 2010, he played against Inter Milan and Manchester City.

Hilário signed new contracts with Chelsea in the following years. He stayed with the club until the end of the 2013–14 season. He retired from playing football in August 2014, at 38 years old.

Playing for Portugal

Hilário was called up to the Portugal national team for the first time in November 2009. He was 34 years old at the time. He was a backup goalkeeper for the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

He made his debut for Portugal on March 3, 2010. He came on as a substitute in a friendly match against China. Portugal won the game 2–0.

Hilário's Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Hilário returned to Chelsea on July 22, 2016. He became an assistant goalkeeping coach under manager Antonio Conte. In August 2018, he was promoted to the main goalkeeping coach position.

On November 20, 2024, Hilário became the goalkeeping coach for the England national team. He joined manager Thomas Tuchel, whom he had worked with at Chelsea. Hilário spent a total of 18 years at Chelsea as both a player and a coach.
