Playing Career: Hilário's Journey as a Goalkeeper
Early Years and Time at Porto
Hilário was born in Fânzeres e São Pedro da Cova, a town in Portugal. He started his football journey in the youth system of FC Porto, one of Portugal's biggest clubs. After leaving Porto's youth team, he began his professional career. He played for smaller clubs like Associação Naval 1º de Maio and Académica de Coimbra.
Hilário returned to Porto for the 1996–97 season. He played in 18 matches and helped the club win the Portuguese championship. However, after a few years, he was often loaned out to other teams. This helped him gain more experience playing regularly. He played for teams like Estrela Amadora and Varzim.
Time at Nacional
In 2004, Hilário left Porto for good and joined C.D. Nacional. He played in 29 matches during his first year with the team. He was an important player there for a couple of seasons before moving to England.
Playing for Chelsea Football Club

On June 1, 2006, Hilário signed with Chelsea, a famous English club. He joined his former coach from Porto, José Mourinho. Hilário was initially the third-choice goalkeeper, behind Petr Čech and Carlo Cudicini.
However, he got a chance to play when both Čech and Cudicini got injured in October 2006. Hilário made his debut for Chelsea on October 18 against Barcelona. He kept a clean sheet (meaning he didn't let the other team score) in a 1–0 win. Three days later, he played his first Premier League match, helping Chelsea win 2–1 against Portsmouth.
During the 2006–07 season, Hilário played in 18 matches. He kept a clean sheet in eight of those games. He even saved a penalty against Sheffield United. When Čech returned from injury, Hilário went back to being a backup.
In the following seasons, Hilário continued to be a reliable backup. He would step in whenever Čech or Cudicini were injured or suspended. For example, in 2008, he played against Fenerbahce SK in the UEFA Champions League after Cudicini got hurt.
When Cudicini left Chelsea in 2009, Hilário became the second-choice goalkeeper. He played when Čech received a red card against Wigan Athletic. He also played well in a match against Liverpool, keeping another clean sheet.
Hilário signed new contracts with Chelsea over the years, showing how much the club valued him. He stayed with Chelsea until the end of the 2013–14 season. He then retired from playing football at the age of 38.
International Career: Representing Portugal
Hilário was first called up to play for the Portugal national team in November 2009. He was 34 years old at the time. He made his debut for Portugal on March 3, 2010. He came on as a substitute in a friendly match against China, which Portugal won 2–0.
Coaching Career: Back to Chelsea and England
After retiring as a player, Hilário returned to Chelsea on July 22, 2016. He became an assistant goalkeeping coach. He later became the main goalkeeping coach for the club in August 2018.
On November 20, 2024, Hilário took on a new role. He became the goalkeeping coach for the England national team. He now works under Thomas Tuchel, a coach he knew from his time at Chelsea. Hilário spent a total of 18 years at Chelsea, first as a player and then as a coach.
