Hilana Sedarous facts for kids
Dr. Hilana Sedarous (in Arabic: د./ هيلانا سيداروس) was an amazing Egyptian doctor. She was born in Tanta, Egypt, in 1904. What makes her special? She was the very first woman to become a doctor in all of Egypt! She belonged to the Coptic community.
Becoming a Doctor
After finishing her first years of school, Hilana Sedarous went to "Madraset Al Saneyah." This was a special boarding school for girls in Cairo. Later, she attended a university to become a teacher.
In 1922, something big happened. Hilana received a scholarship! This meant she got money to study abroad. She was sent to London with five other Egyptian girls. They went to study mathematics. Hilana and another student, Zainab Kamel, were among the first Egyptian girls ever sent to study in England.
But Hilana didn't stop there. She also joined the London School of Medicine. She worked very hard. In 1930, she officially became a certified physician. She had earned her doctorate degree.
Her Medical Career
After becoming a doctor, Dr. Sedarous returned to Egypt. She was now the first female doctor in the country! She started working at Kitchener Hospital in Cairo. This hospital is now called Shoubra General Hospital.
She performed many surgeries there. She also did her surgical work at the Coptic Hospital. Besides working at the hospital, Dr. Sedarous opened her own private clinic. She was a specialist in two important areas:
- Obstetrics: This is the branch of medicine that deals with childbirth.
- Gynaecology: This focuses on women's health.
Later Life and Generosity
Dr. Sedarous worked for a very long time. She retired when she was in her seventies. Even after retiring, she stayed busy. She spent her time translating stories and books for children.
Dr. Sedarous was known for being very kind and generous. She especially cared for orphans and orphanages. She gave away most of her large wealth. She donated to many different charities throughout her life.
Her Passing
Dr. Sedarous passed away in 1998. She died of natural causes.
