Most of the homes in Hillcrest Heights are single-family houses called ramblers or duplex homes. These were mostly built in the 1950s and 1960s.

You can find Iverson Mall here, which is a shopping center that opened in 1967. It serves shoppers from Maryland and even from the Anacostia area of Washington. Right next to the mall is the older Marlow Heights shopping center.

Getting around is easy because stations for the Metrorail Green Line are nearby. Also close by are the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland, and a bit further out, Joint Base Andrews and the Capital Beltway. The neighborhood is also convenient if you need to get to Capitol Hill.

The population of Hillcrest Heights was 16,469 people in 2010. By 2020, the population had slightly decreased to 15,793 people. The community is home to a diverse group of people from different backgrounds.

A Look Back at Hillcrest Heights' History

A long time ago, in 1671, much of the land that is now Hillcrest Heights was part of a large estate called Colebrook. It was bought by Thomas Dent and William Hatton. Later, in 1688, Colonel John Addison purchased it. The Addison family built their main home, Colebrook Manor, in 1808. It was located in the Oxon Run Valley, not far from the Washington, D.C. border.

Schools in Hillcrest Heights

The Prince George's County Public Schools district serves the children living in Hillcrest Heights.

  • Some parts of the community are served by Hillcrest Heights Elementary School.
  • Other parts are served by Panorama Elementary School.
  • All students in the area attend Benjamin Stoddert Middle School.
  • Most high school students go to Potomac High School, while some attend Crossland High School.
  • There is also a special school for students with unique learning needs called Jessie B. Mason Regional School. It used to be known as Hillcrest Heights Special Center.

There was once a Catholic school called Holy Family Catholic School in Hillcrest Heights. It taught students from pre-kindergarten up to 8th grade and opened in 1957. This school closed at the end of the 2019–2020 school year.
