Hillhead High School is a large school in Glasgow, Scotland. It's located on Oakfield Avenue, right next to the famous University of Glasgow. This school has been teaching students for a very long time, helping them learn and grow.

Hillhead High School is one of the biggest schools in Glasgow. It welcomes students from age 12 to 18, covering school years S1 to S6. The school is for both boys and girls, meaning it's coeducational. About 1080 students attended in September 2018, with around 90 staff members.

The school's motto is Nous maintiendrons, which is French for "We shall maintain." This means they aim to keep up high standards and traditions.

A Look Back: Hillhead High School's History

Early Days as a Grammar School

Hillhead High School first opened in 1885 as Hillhead Primary School. For many years, until 1972, it was a "selective school." This meant students had to pass a special test to get in. Both boys and girls could attend.

Becoming a Comprehensive School

In 1972, things changed. The local government in Glasgow decided to stop the entrance tests. Hillhead High School slowly became a "comprehensive school." This means it started welcoming all students from its local area in Glasgow's West End. It also continued to serve students who had attended the primary school.

Teachers Who Made a Difference

Some notable people have taught at Hillhead High School. For example, Colin Campbell, who later became a politician for the Scottish National Party (SNP), taught there from 1961 to 1963.

School Buildings and Spaces

Hillhead High School has two main buildings: the Main Building and the Terrace Building. They also use the nearby Wellington Church for big school gatherings, like at Christmas or Easter.

The Main Building

The Main Building is shaped like an "X" and is the bigger of the two. It was bought by the school in the 1930s. Most students start their studies here. This building has four floors with many classrooms and school offices. You'll also find the school library here. An advisor visits the library twice a week to help students with careers and exams.

The Main Building was designed in 1921 and finished in 1929. It's now a "category B listed building," which means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected.

The Terrace Building

The Terrace Building used to belong to the University of Glasgow. Hillhead High School got this building around 2001. It's mainly used for practical subjects and applied studies.
