Hillisburg is a small, unincorporated community located in Johnson Township, Clinton County, Indiana. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county or township.
History of Hillisburg
Hillisburg was started in 1874 by a local businessman named John Etherton Hillis. He was a financier, which means he dealt with money and investments. By 1886, Hillisburg was a busy little place! It had two general stores where people could buy almost anything they needed. There were also two drug stores, a blacksmith shop (where metal items were made), a saw mill (for cutting wood), a grist mill (for grinding grain), and a grain elevator (for storing grain).
In the early 1900s, Hillisburg also had its own bank, the Hillisburg Bank. There were two churches, Christian and Methodist Episcopalian, and a Masonic Lodge. A Masonic Lodge is a local meeting place for members of a fraternal organization called the Freemasons. The post office in Hillisburg closed down in 1992.
Famous Person from Hillisburg
- Zerna Sharp was born near Hillisburg. She was a very important person in education. Zerna Sharp helped create the famous "Dick and Jane" readers. These were a series of books used to teach millions of children how to read in schools across the United States for many years.
