Long ago, Hills Flat was just a crossroads, a place where different roads met. As cars became popular, more people started moving there. By 1932, it was growing fast and had its own shops and services, like a small town. It was an unincorporated community, which means it wasn't officially part of any city yet.
Joining Grass Valley
In 1934, the people of Hills Flat had a chance to vote on whether to join Grass Valley. This kind of vote is called a referendum. They decided not to join at that time.
However, many years later, in 1967, the residents of Hills Flat voted again. This time, they chose to become part of Grass Valley. This process is called annexation, where one area officially becomes part of another.
Hills Flat Today
Today, Hills Flat is known as an important "business district" within Grass Valley. It's especially well-known for its large lumber yard, which is a place where wood and timber are stored and sold.
