Hillsboro's History
Hillsboro started in the late 1830s as a small community. It was first known as "Gilmersville." This name came from an early family who settled in the area.
In the 1860s, a railroad was built through the region. The town then moved to its current spot right next to the train tracks. Hillsboro grew during the late 1800s. It became an important stop where trains could refuel. It also served as a local center for shipping goods. The town's name was later changed to "Hillsborough." The way it's spelled today, "Hillsboro," was adopted in 1891.

Hillsboro is located in Alabama at coordinates 34°38′17″N 87°11′18″W / 34.63806°N 87.18833°W. The town is mostly found along County Road 217, also known as Main Street. This road is just south of a railroad crossing.
The town is a few miles west of Decatur. It's also a few miles south of Wheeler Lake. The town's official borders reach northward to U.S. Route 72. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Hillsboro covers a total area of about 1.9 square miles (4.9 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
