History of Hillsboro
Hillsboro was first called Washington. But its name had to be changed because another town in Iowa was already named Washington. The town of Hillsboro was officially started in 1840.

Sports Stars
The Hillsboro High School Girls Basketball Team was very good in the 1930s.
- In 1933, they played in the state championship game but lost.
- They made it to the championship again in 1935, but were runners-up once more.
A famous player from Hillsboro was Mildred "Millie" Moore Burkhart. She led the team to both state runner-up finishes. The Des Moines Register newspaper called her the greatest guard in basketball history. She was chosen as the best player in the 1935 state tournament. Millie was also picked for the all-state team three years in a row. In 1961, she was one of the first people added to the Iowa State Girls Basketball Hall of Fame. She was also honored in the Van Buren County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020.
Another talented player was Grace Watson. In 1935, she was chosen as one of the best forwards in the state tournament. She made the all-state team in 1935 and was second all-state in 1934.
