The Hillside Haven Mound is an ancient Native American mound in Ohio. It is located in the southwestern part of the state. You can find it in a thick forest in Clinton County. This mound sits on the side of a hill.

When it was first built, the mound was probably shaped like a cone. Today, it looks more rounded. It is about 2.5 feet (0.76 m) tall and 33 feet (10 m) wide.

What is the Hillside Haven Mound?

The Hillside Haven Mound is a special place. It is an archaeological site. This means it holds clues about people who lived long ago. The mound is believed to be a burial mound. This type of mound was built over the body of an important person.

Who Built the Mound?

Archaeologists believe the mound was built by the Adena culture. The Adena people were Native Americans. They lived in parts of Ohio and nearby areas a very long time ago. They were known for building many mounds.

Discoveries at the Mound

Experts from Wilmington College studied the mound. They did a small test excavation nearby. During this dig, they found pieces of Adena pottery. These findings help us understand the mound's history.

Archaeologists have learned a lot from other Adena mounds. The Adena people often built small log houses for their important dead. They would then burn these houses in a ceremony. After that, they would pile up earth to create a mound over the ruins. Even though the Hillside Haven Mound has not been fully dug up, the clues found suggest it is a typical Adena mound. It likely contains items used for ceremonies and everyday life.

Why is the Mound Important?

The Hillside Haven Mound is very important for understanding history. In 1978, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places that are special because of their history or culture.

A Rare Survivor

This mound is one of the last Native American mounds left in Clinton County. This makes it a rare link to the past. It shows us how Native Americans lived in this area long ago.

Well-Preserved History

The mound is in unusually good condition. This is partly because of where it is located. It sits along a trail at a campground. This campground used to be called Hillside Haven. Its protected location has helped keep it safe over the years.

Other Local Sites

Clinton County has other important archaeological sites. Four more are also on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Hurley and Keiter Mounds. There is also the Cowan Creek Circular Enclosure. Finally, the Beam Farm Woodland Archaeological District is also listed.
