About the Hilltown Area
Hilltown is an "inner city" area, meaning it's close to the main part of Dundee. It sits on a hill, so it offers great views of the River Tay. Hilltown is one of the oldest parts of Dundee.
Long ago, Hilltown was a busy place for the jute industry. Many mill workers lived here because it was close to their jobs. Today, it's mainly a residential area. There's a shopping street, but many shops have closed because new shopping malls are easier to reach in the city center.
Changes and New Buildings
Many tall apartment buildings were taken down, which has led to new developments. Four of the biggest tower blocks, known as the 'Alexander Street Multis', were demolished on July 31, 2011. Two more, Butterburn Court and Bucklemaker Court, were taken down on June 30, 2013.
New public spaces and play areas have been created. Hilltown Park opened in September 2008. It's an urban park designed for local people and visitors to enjoy.
