Early Days and Squaw Grove
Back in the 1830s, a man named Mr. Hollenbeck was exploring the area. He discovered a group of trees and named it Squaw Grove. He named it after the Native American women he saw taking care of their camp there.
In 1835, the first log house was built by John Sebree. More families soon arrived, and a small town called Squaw Grove began. This town was located just west of where Hinckley is today.
How Hinckley Got Its Name
In the 1870s, the Chicago and Iowa Railroad was being built. The president of the railroad, Francis Hinckley, decided to place the new train line about half a mile east of Squaw Grove. Because of this, the area around the new railroad was named Hinckley.
The first store in Hinckley opened in 1872. Just four years later, by 1876, Hinckley had grown to have twenty different businesses!
Important Events in Hinckley
The Methodist Church started in the area in 1835, and St. Paul's Church was built in 1885. A group of volunteers formed a fire brigade in 1886 to help protect the village.
Sadly, in 1889, a powerful tornado hit Hinckley and destroyed most of the village. But the community worked together to rebuild.
