Hinmansville is a small community called a hamlet. It is located in the town of Schroeppel. This area is part of Oswego County in New York, United States. Hinmansville sits right on the Oswego River. Students in Hinmansville attend schools in the Phoenix Central School District.

History of Hinmansville

Early Days and Founding

Hinmansville was started in 1827. It was founded by a person named John E. Hinman. When the community was first built, it had important buildings. These included a church and a schoolhouse. However, these original buildings are no longer standing today.

Life in the Past

For many years, until the late 1950s or early 1960s, Hinmansville had a small general store. This store was a place where people could buy everyday items. There is also a cemetery in Hinmansville. It is called the Hinmansville Cemetery. You can find it on Hawthorne Road. Some of the graves in this cemetery date back to the 1830s.

The River's Importance

Because Hinmansville is right on the Oswego River, it became a busy spot. Boatmen traveling on the river often stopped there. During its busiest time as a boating town, Hinmansville had a different name. It was known as "Horseshoe Rifts."

Hinmansville Today

Hinmansville is a small community. It is not officially listed by the U.S. Census Bureau. This means it's not counted like larger cities or towns. However, it is recognized as a postal hamlet. This means it has its own post office services. About 150 people live in Hinmansville today.

Farming and Families

Many families in Hinmansville have a history of farming. One of these families is the Minota family. They are descendants of Polish immigrants. About 55 to 60 members of this family live in or near Hinmansville. In the past, these families had large working farms. Even today, some of this land is still used for farming. People grow small vegetables, corn, and trees. They also raise horses.
