The Hisonotus montanus is a small type of catfish. It belongs to a group of fish called Loricariidae, which are often known as "armored catfish" because they have bony plates on their bodies. This tiny fish is only found in a specific part of Brazil.

About the Mountain Catfish

This special catfish is known only from the Canoas River area in Brazil. It is quite small, usually growing to about 4.5 centimeters (1.8 inches) long. That's about the length of your thumb!

Why is it Called "Montanus"?

The name montanus comes from the word "mountain." This catfish got its name because it lives in high places. It is found at altitudes of about 850 meters (2,789 feet) above sea level. This makes it the Hisonotus species that lives the highest up in the Uruguay River basin.
