The First Shots at Lexington
Years later, people became very interested in the American Revolution. This was especially true during the bicentennial celebration, which marked 200 years since the war began. Volunteers started to reenact the battle every year on Patriots' Day.
Who Fought? Minutemen and Redcoats
The original fighters were the Lexington Minutemen. They were a group of local militia, like a volunteer army, who could be ready to fight in a minute. They played their own roles in the reenactment. But it wasn't until 1971 that a group called the American Contingent of the Tenth Regiment of Foot was formed. They took on the roles of the British military forces, often called "Redcoats."

The reenactment of the "shot heard round the world" is a very early morning event. It starts at 5:30 AM, just before the sun comes up.
What Happens During the Reenactment?
The Minute Men gather on the Battle Green. Then, the British soldiers, called "regulars," march in. When the Minute Men's captain sees them, he gives his men a few brave words.
The Captain's Words
He tells them, "Steady, men! Steady, men! Stand your ground! Do not fire unless fired upon!" At 6:00 AM, the battle officially begins. The British regulars quickly win this first skirmish.

The Lexington Historical Society helps keep other historical places in their original condition. They offer tours of these old buildings. Some places even have staff dressed in real colonial clothes. They can answer questions and explain what life was like back then.

One of these interesting buildings is Munroe Tavern. During the battle, the British soldiers used this tavern as a quick hospital for their injured troops.
