The history of Dallas, Texas, from 1946 to 1974 was a time of big changes for the city. Dallas grew a lot, especially in technology and business. It also became known around the world because of a very sad event.

Dallas Becomes a Tech Hub

During the 1950s and 1960s, Dallas became a major center for new technology. This was a really exciting time!

The Invention of the Integrated Circuit

In 1958, something amazing happened in Dallas. A scientist named Jack Kilby, who worked at a company called Texas Instruments, invented a special device. It was called an integrated circuit. Think of it like a tiny, super-smart electronic brain. This invention helped make many modern electronics possible, like computers and phones.

Even though another similar invention happened in California, Dallas became a very important place for making high-tech stuff. Companies like Ling-Temco-Vought (LTV Corporation) and Texas Instruments grew a lot. Dallas became one of the top three technology centers in the United States.

Growing Dallas: New Buildings and Business

Dallas also saw a lot of new buildings and business projects during this time. The city was expanding and becoming a hub for trade.

The Dallas Market Center

In 1957, two developers named Trammell Crow and John M. Stemmons opened a huge building. It was called the Home Furnishings Mart. This place grew into the Dallas Market Center. It became the biggest place in the world where businesses could buy and sell goods in large amounts. Imagine a giant marketplace for stores!

Dallas Memorial Auditorium

Also in 1957, a large building called the Dallas Memorial Auditorium opened. Today, it's known as the Dallas Convention Center. This building was important for hosting big events and meetings in the city.

A Sad Day in Dallas History

On November 22, 1963, a very sad event took place in Dallas. The President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, was visiting the city.

President Kennedy's Visit

President Kennedy was riding in a special car, called a motorcade, through Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas. Many people had gathered to see him.

Sadly, during this visit, President Kennedy was shot and passed away. The Governor of Texas, John Connally, was also hurt but he survived. This event was a shock to the whole world and is a very important part of Dallas's history.
