Hiten (spacecraft) facts for kids
Hiten was Japan's first space probe sent to the Moon. It was a very important mission because it was the first time a country other than the Soviet Union or the United States sent a probe to the Moon.
Japan's First Lunar Probe
Hiten was launched on January 24, 1990. It was a project by a special space research group in Japan called the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, which is part of the University of Tokyo.
Reaching the Moon
When Hiten first got close to the Moon, it released a smaller satellite. This little orbiter was named Hagoromo. The name Hagoromo means "feather mantle" in Japanese.
