Hizbul Mujahideen, also known as Hizb-ul-Mujahidin, means 'Party of Holy Fighters'. It is an armed group that has been involved in a conflict in the Jammu and Kashmir region since 1989. This group aims to separate Kashmir from India and join it with Pakistan. Because of this goal, Hizbul Mujahideen has played a big part in the ongoing Kashmir conflict.

About Hizbul Mujahideen

Hizbul Mujahideen was started in September 1989. It began as a group that brought together different armed fighters. Soon after it started, the group came under the control of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir, and it is often seen as their military branch.

How the Group Started

From the very beginning, Hizbul Mujahideen received support from Pakistan's intelligence agency, called the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The group was formed as part of an effort that began under Pakistan's former president, Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

Where They Are Based

The main headquarters of Hizbul Mujahideen is in Muzaffarabad. This city is the capital of Azad Kashmir, a part of Kashmir that is managed by Pakistan. The group also has offices in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. These are important cities in Pakistan, with Islamabad being the political capital and Rawalpindi being a key military city.

Their Actions and Status

Hizbul Mujahideen has said they are responsible for many armed attacks in the Kashmir region. Because of these actions, several countries and organizations consider them a dangerous group. The European Union, India, Canada, and the United States have officially listed Hizbul Mujahideen as a terrorist group. However, in Pakistan, the group is still allowed to operate legally.
