How Hjo Municipality Was Formed
Hjo Municipality was created in 1971. This happened when the old City of Hjo joined with a part of the nearby rural area called Värsås. Later, in 1974, even more parts from the areas of Fröjered and Fågelås were added. This made the municipality bigger and stronger.
Exploring Hjo's Beautiful Nature
Hjo Municipality is located right by the western shore of Lake Vättern. This is one of Sweden's largest lakes. The big, fish-filled waters of Lake Vättern have always been very important for the local industries.
The most important rivulet that flows through the municipality and into Lake Vättern is the Hjo River. Parts of this river have been made into a special nature reserve. This is because of the amazing fish that live there. You can find salmon (also known as Salmo trutta) and grayling (Thymallus thymallus) naturally in the river. These fish have sometimes faced challenges because of dams built along the river.
People and Life in Hjo
Hjo Municipality is home to about 9,200 people. This number includes everyone living there, no matter their age or where they are from. About 7,200 of these people are Swedish citizens who are old enough to vote.
When people vote in elections, they often choose between different groups of political parties. In Hjo, about 45% of voters chose parties that are often called the "left coalition." About 54% of voters chose parties that are often called the "right coalition."
Most adults in Hjo Municipality are employed and pay taxes. This shows that many people have jobs and contribute to the community. A large number of residents were born in Sweden with Swedish parents. However, there are also people with foreign heritage, which means they were born abroad or have parents who were born abroad. This mix of people makes Hjo a diverse place. Many people in Hjo also have a university degree, meaning they continued their education after high school.
