The Hmong people are an amazing Asian ethnic group with a rich history. They originally come from China, especially near the Yangtze and Yellow rivers. Over time, starting in the 18th century, many Hmong families began to move to other countries in Southeast Asia. Today, you can find Hmong communities across China, northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. After a big change in government in Laos in 1975, many Hmong people moved even further away. They now live in places like the United States, Australia, France, French Guiana, and Canada. The Hmong people often see themselves as different groups, like the White Hmong and the Green Hmong, along with other smaller communities.

A Look at Hmong History

The Hmong people have a very long history, living in southern China for at least 2,000 years! They have been part of many important events throughout history.

Conflicts and Changes

From 1919 to 1921, the Hmong people were involved in a conflict that the French called the "War of the Insane." This was a time of struggle and change for many Hmong communities.

Later, from 1962 to 1975, the Hmong people were involved in a major conflict in Laos. This war is known as the Laotian Civil War, or sometimes the "Secret War." After this war ended in 1975, a new government took control in Laos. This led to many Hmong people leaving their homes and moving to other countries around the world.
