History of Hoegaarden

The Gorgonius church

The village of Hoegaarden was started in the year 981. It was founded by the last ruler of a place called Brunengeruz. Later, a countess named Alpaïdis gave her land and castle to the Prince-Bishop of Liège. The castle site is now where the St-Gorgoniuskerk church stands.

Brewing in Hoegaarden

Because Hoegaarden was part of the Liège prince-bishopric, it had special tax benefits. This meant people paid less tax compared to nearby villages. These benefits helped the brewing industry grow a lot in Hoegaarden. Many breweries opened and made different kinds of drinks.

However, these tax benefits ended after the French Revolution. The Prince-Bishopric of Liège was no longer in charge. By 1955, the brewing industry in Hoegaarden had almost completely disappeared.

The Return of White Beer

A man named Pierre Celis later brought back the town's famous white beer. This special beer became very popular around the world. In 2005, there was a plan to close the Hoegaarden Brewery in the town. The idea was to move the beer production to another brewery in southern Belgium.

But the beer did not taste the same when it was made elsewhere. So, the plan to move the brewery was stopped. The Hoegaarden Brewery stayed in Hoegaarden, keeping its special beer tradition alive.
